"Mr President, the applause for Ms Malmström is very well deserved. She made a personal commitment to this first post-Lisbon-Treaty part of the immigration package. I would like to thank her for sustaining that commitment every step of the way. This was a very big job – it took more than three-and-a-half years – even though, when it comes to one swift vote it does not feel like it.
I would like to thank, in particular, those Members who spoke in the debate – some of them have left, but one or two are still here – and those Members who have actually read the proposal and who understand all the work that went into it to ensure flexibility for Member States, on the one hand, while, on the other, retaining all our European Union values to protect the vulnerability of seasonal workers. This was a very difficult thing to do and yet, over those three-and-a-half years, working across political groups, we did it. That means that our shadows, whom I did not thank at the beginning –Mr Mulder, if he is listening, Ms Ernst, Mr Kirkhope, who is not here, Ms Sargentini, whom I had already thanked, and Mr Cercas Alejandro – spent hours and hours trialogues. I would also like to thank our excellent staff – who are not normally thanked and at whom I am looking right now – and my own staff. These people too spend hours in trialogues, and I do not think that this is appreciated outside the House.
It took three-and-a-half years to produce a sensitive proposal that will, I believe, work in what is a very sensitive area. Maintaining our values is a job well done, and I thank all my colleagues who made it happen. I look forward to the vote."@en1
