"Mr President, the rights that this legislation gives to the passengers who depart from EU airports – and I regret that we do not have Gibraltar included unless we pass the amendments – are very important and fundamental rights. The current law has not been one of the easiest to implement, particularly concerning extraordinary circumstances. The Civil Aviation Authority in the UK, for instance, is really struggling with this term. Our clarifications really do help in this respect. The results today will give clarity as to where a passenger should get compensation for a reason that is not at all extraordinary. I also welcome better clarity on baggage allowances: we have said a lot about the two-bag rule and the one-bag rule. I am hopeful for the success of my amendment suggesting a tax-free ticket for a carer required to accompany a person with disabilities. I would not support new amendments that take things one step too far, as the unintended consequences would be more cancellations, fewer regional flights, fewer through tickets and increased prices for passengers. As Liberal Democrats, we champion fairness for passengers and I believe that this legislation delivers just that."@en1
