"Mr President, I think disagreement is probably the appropriate word to describe tonight’s debate and it was likewise in my group discussions, despite the excellent work of Anne Delvaux. There are, of course, no irrefutable arguments as to the way forward. We have opinions, but we do not have irrefutable arguments. But one thing is very clear. Firstly, we must avoid a situation where, as Commissioner Tajani said, Europe becomes an industrial wasteland because of lack of competitiveness. Secondly, we need to wean ourselves off imported fossil fuels.
There are different views on how we do that. My country actually favours three binding targets because we feel that without binding targets, renewables in particular will be moved off the map and weak governments will submit to pressure from various groups and take the easy option of continuing to import fossil fuels, rather than taking the correct and strong decisions we need to ensure we are competitive into the future."@en1
