"Mr President, I think it is a good report and I hope it will get support tomorrow from across the House. But when I listen to tonight’s debate, I do have a bit of a heavy heart. I was thinking back to five years ago, when we had just adopted the climate package and had a clear ambition – across all the mainstream parties here – about what we needed to do. Now we cannot even take simple decisions quickly, like with the ETS back-loading. As Mrs Hall said, at a time when the evidence of climate change is all around us, our citizens understand what it means. If you look at the Commission proposal, yes, it keeps the show on the road, but it is not as ambitious as I would have liked and, I think, as some of the Commission would have liked as well. I am very disappointed about the targets, but also disappointed about something that nobody else has mentioned: the FQD, the Food Quality Directive. I feel we have given in to the tar sands lobby on that. Yet there are some people in this room who want to water down the Commission’s proposal even further; we have an ECR resolution tomorrow which suggests that we should do nothing; nothing until after the COP in Paris in 2015. So we should go naked into the conference chamber and tell the rest of the world: ‘we are not doing anything until you do something’. That is not the way to lead in the world; that is not the way to lead on climate change. We have businesses across Europe urging us to act; 2030 is tomorrow in terms of investment for companies. So let us hear about real industrial strategy for the long-term."@en1
