"Mr President, we need affordable, secure and sustainable energy policies. In the past decade, Europe’s industrial policy has been neglected in favour of climate policies. In seven years, our energy prices have risen by 40%, but in the USA they are down by 4%. Companies have relocated to countries with cheaper energy. They take jobs with them, and this does not make for a cleaner planet. De-industrialising Europe is not the solution. We need to work with industry and enable investment in infrastructure.
The EU currently creates 11% of global greenhouse gas emissions. This is predicted to drop to 4.5% by 2030. We alone cannot save the world – it needs a global effort. An EU emissions target is a good sign to others and an important sign of a global bargain. Member States must be free to choose their own energy mix: nuclear, renewables, CCS, shale and energy efficiency too. The Commission has listened to those who say ‘time for change’: let us not blow this chance for change."@en1
