"Mr President, recently the International Panel on Climate Change published a report showing that 95% of scientific research points to human action being the cause of climate change, yet the Commission has failed to produce ambitious 2030 climate and energy targets. I urge this Parliament to endorse legally binding targets for greenhouse gas emission reduction, renewable energy and energy efficiency. These targets must be ambitious if we are to avoid unprecedented global warming.
Despite what the Commissioner said, the lack of ambition in the Commission’s proposal has the potential to knock the wind and wave out of an industry which has been booming, thanks to legally binding 2020 targets for renewables. We believe that it has vast potential to go further. These three binding targets promote much-needed investment in green and renewable technology. I do not believe that false options, such as nuclear or carbon capture and storage, are the way forward."@en1
