"As has been the case with many sectors of EU heavy industry, the steel industry has been in sharp decline over the last few decades, a decline further exacerbated by the financial crisis of 2007. As András Gyürk’s report highlights, it is imperative that we do not abandon the common principles that first led EU Member States to develop closer economic ties with one another. Rapid globalisation in recent years has dramatically changed the face of the steel industry, and the EU steel industry is now obliged to adapt very swiftly in order to survive these changes. In order to rebalance the mechanisms that have led to over-capacities we must boost demand for EU steel production. I therefore welcome the Action Plan’s proposals aimed at reviving the industry by strengthening structures already in place as well as encouraging competition by eliminating many of the barriers that have hindered progress in recent years. By making these key changes and modernising this sector, we are securing the EU steel industry’s role as a key player in the competitive global market of today."@en1
