"In the midst of the economic crisis, e-commerce has defied the effects of the downturn. The EU’s e-commerce market grew by over 20% in 2012, with the delivery of goods purchased online seen as one of the Commission’s top five priorities for boosting e-commerce by 2015. Crucial to sustaining the growth of e-commerce is consumer confidence in the online transaction process. I support the report’s calls for more cooperation between e-retailers and delivery operators, more readily comparable information on delivery options and more transparent information on procedures to follow in case of damage to or loss of goods or delay. I also support the report’s efforts to create a level playing field for SMEs, with easier access to online markets so they can sell their products across borders. In my constituency, both consumers and small businesses often have to contend with higher prices for delivery, given Northern Ireland’s relatively peripheral location. I hope that this report’s calls for more affordable delivery options for consumers and sellers to ensure a genuinely single market are heeded. Nevertheless, I believe the enforcement of the existing regulatory framework, rather than a new regulation, is the best means to achieve this."@en1
