"Mr President, I voted against this report because the general tone of the report indicates further sources of funding will be needed, either from the common agricultural policy (CAP), or the wider EU budget. Given that the CAP has recently been reformed and that we have cut budgets across the board to meet the realities of Member State governments, I feel that the report’s measures will be unnecessarily expensive.
It is vital that we continue to support farmers with small agricultural holdings. Such holdings are fundamental to the diversity of the farming sector and offer an important link between product and community, but throwing money at the problem does not necessarily produce results.
While I recognise the hard work of small farm workers, we must look at alternate solutions. We cannot reopen the CAP, nor can we increase EU spending. Cooperation between smallholdings, environment and animal-welfare sections is vital and it will be a great way forward. I do not believe pumping millions into the sector right now is appropriate."@en1
