"I support smart grid schemes that create a more efficient and effective energy supply. My own constituency has experienced an upward spiral of energy prices. While regulating costs is a separate issue, the use of smart grid systems can promote a ‘demand side response’, reducing generation capacity and cost as consumers take more responsibility for their electricity consumption. In Northern Ireland, a number of smart grid initiatives in places like Coleraine and Londonderry have begun, with the Northern Ireland Executive and the Utility Regulator starting to facilitate the use of demand side units in the local electricity market. Moreover, Northern Ireland Electricity is working to secure EU funding under the Connecting Europe Facility in relation to smart grids. Nevertheless, despite my support for these initiatives, I am concerned about two aspects of the report. Firstly, it sets extremely ambitious climate change targets for 2030. Secondly, it arguably breaches the subsidiarity principle, as 20 % of the European Regional Development Fund is earmarked for a ‘low carbon economy’. It ought to be the decision of Member States how this funding is spent and prioritised. Therefore I voted against this non-legislative report, but I continue to support the development of smart grids."@en1
