"Mr President, I was proud to vote in favour of the Lunacek report for an EU roadmap against homophobia. This is particularly timely in relation to the debate that is taking place in Ireland at the moment. Recently a young gay activist and drag queen appeared on Irish television and expressed his view that groups and individuals that have traditionally opposed LGBTI rights, particularly in relation to marriage and family rights, were homophobic. The groups and the individuals sued, the television station paid out immediately, and there is now a real fear that this will stymie debate on the issues in Ireland.
Ireland is currently passing adoption legislation to enable gay couples to adopt, and next year we will have a referendum on same-sex marriage. It will be important that we can have those debates in calm and reasoned environments. I believe that the Lunacek report presents a roadmap for Member States to ensure non-discrimination against LGBTI people, and I hope that the Commission and Member States will move to implement its recommendations as soon as possible."@en1
