"Mr President, today I voted in favour of an EU roadmap against homophobia. I have been extremely vocal recently in criticising legislation in Russia, and also legislation around the world that even criminalises LGBT lifestyles. In this respect it is absolutely vital that we ensure that we have our European house completely in order. We still have some homophobia in the air in Europe. Anyone can experience homophobic bullying, just for being different. This particularly impacts young people growing up, because they will not feel that they can be themselves. We cannot accept that in an inclusive society. My liberal principles mean that I must champion fairness, equality and diversity. I welcome all the work that many charities do to fight against homophobia and homophobic behaviour but, as Members of the European Parliament, we also need to do our part."@en1
