"Around 12 million EU citizens study, work or live in another EU Member State. Some methods of establishing the authenticity of certain public documents are expensive, time consuming and can be considered disproportionate. To combat this, I have today voted in favour of the report on ‘promoting free movement by simplifying the acceptance of certain public documents’. The proposed regulation aims to simplify the completion of administrative formalities for citizens by increasing the acceptance of certain public documents within the EU. I hope that this aids Member States, as cross-border administrative formalities are generally considerably more complicated than Member States’ national procedures. Often, citizens moving to another Member State may have to have their documents legalised by diplomatic authorities, provide expensive certified translations of simple documents, or submit certified copies of official records. I hope that this report helps relieve the administrative burden of migration in the EU."@en1
