"The inclusion of Greenland in the Kimberley Process can be seen as another step towards further strengthening its already close ties with the EU. Greenland exports over 90 % of its goods to the EU, thus it is only natural for Greenland now also to be included in this scheme. Accession to the Kimberley Process can also be seen as a new dimension to the existing trade agreements already in place between the EU, Greenland and Africa. Whilst the main objective of the Kimberley Process has been to promote the ethical sourcing of rough diamonds, the overall aim is to continue efforts towards definitively eliminating conflict diamonds from the global market. We must therefore welcome Greenland’s participation in this wider process. Mr Moreira’s report also highlights the need for Greenland to diversify its economy in order to become less reliant on its primary source of trade, its fishing industry. Thus the Kimberley Process has an important part to play along this new route towards a more diversified trading economy for Greenland."@en1
