"I voted in favour of the joint resolution on an EU homelessness strategy. Focus Ireland estimates that there are up to 5 000 homeless people at any one time in Ireland. According to a report on homelessness compiled by the Irish Central Statistics Office, when the last census was taken in Ireland on 10 April 2011, 3 808 people were in accommodation providing shelter for homeless persons or were identified sleeping rough. While the individual Member States are responsible for combating homelessness, the development of an EU homelessness strategy could assist Member States by, for example, sharing best practices and developing opportunities for mutual learning, making measures to tackle homelessness a priority across all relevant EU policy areas and making funding streams available. I voted in favour of an amendment that calls for an end to the criminalisation of homelessness in certain Member States. The poorest and most vulnerable members of our society must be protected rather than being victimised further. We risk the continuation of a failure to respect the fundamental human dignity of every person unless we act now to develop an EU-wide strategy to address homelessness."@en1
