"Mr President, most people in my London constituency welcome immigrants who come to Britain to work and to contribute. I say that as the child of immigrants who did so a number of years ago. However, as politicians, we have to listen to the very real concerns of our constituents and, when it comes to freedom of movement within the EU, there are two concerns that are often expressed. The first is about the sheer numbers, in terms of cultural cohesion and also of the impact on public services. The second issue is that of benefit tourism: the phenomenon of people coming with no intention of working, but simply because they get higher levels of benefits in the UK. As politicians, we have a duty to respond and listen to the concerns of constituents. Viviane Reding may call it populism – we call it democracy."@en1
