"Mr President, the title of this report – Reindustrialising Europe to Promote Competitiveness and Sustainability – reflects the concerns felt by many commentators across Europe, that the financial crisis of 2008 and the subsequent euro crisis have had disastrous consequences in the Union, highlighting in the process the competitiveness weakness that is so pertinent in the face of emerging economies such as China.
A revitalised industrial sector, built on the foundations of a skilled work force and flexible employment laws and underpinned by a strong research and development base, is what Europe needs for the future to maintain its competitive edge.
I was therefore disappointed to see the report calling for tax harmonisation, a move which is not only beyond the competence of the EU but, more worryingly, is endemic to the fraudulent calls for ‘more Europe’ in order to ensure that a competitive crisis is ended in Europe."@en1
