"I supported this resolution, which calls for the EU to take more action to combat wildlife crime. The trade in illegal wildlife products is now worth USDĀ 19 billion a year and, as well as damaging biodiversity through the loss of already endangered species, represents a threat to security and the rule of law in many countries as there is evidence that it is linked to organised crime, the funding of armed militias and terrorism. Organised crime travels across borders, making this a global problem that requires coordinated action at both EU and international level. The resolution calls for measures to ensure that law enforcement forces have the knowledge and resources to combat this growing crime and for tougher sanctions for those involved so as to ensure that penalties really do act as a deterrent. With the EU one of the foremost destinations for illegal wildlife products, we also need to take steps to reduce demand through targeted awareness-raising campaigns."@en1
