"Public procurement is a key factor in building and strengthening the Welsh economy. I have therefore followed this debate in recent years and worked for an outcome which would make it fairer and easier for Welsh companies to win Welsh contracts.
Cutting red tape is also a major factor in procurement. While this report could have gone much further in terms of simplification, I voted in favour of it because it is a big improvement on the situation we have currently. In my constituency only half of public contracts are awarded to Welsh companies. If that figure was increased to 75%, it could create almost 50 000 jobs. The new legislation should ensure that government and local authorities can no longer blame EU rules for failure to increase this percentage."@en1
