"Mr President, if, as I said a while ago, ‘smart’ has been the key buzzword around here over the last couple of years, then ‘e’ is the key buzz letter. We have spoken regularly about e-commerce, e-banking, e-learning and, tonight, of course, e-health – which has tremendous potential, for both patients and practitioners.
I have attended a number of seminars on the subject in recent years. The Netherlands, in particular, was quick off the mark in this field. E-health is now becoming more available and, quite rightly, is being taken more seriously in many areas. The benefit of e-health is that – in certain circumstances at least – the patient can go to the doctor without actually going to the doctor physically. That, of course, brings into question one thing which we have to be very careful about, and which the rapporteur mentioned: namely, data protection. I am involved in the discussions on this, and we have to get the balance right between protecting the data of consumers and enabling research by the medical professions so that we can develop cures to many of our common diseases."@en1
