"Mr President, firstly I want to put on record to this House that I believe that healthcare is primarily a matter for the Member State, and that therefore there is an issue of subsidiarity which must be recognised by the House. However, I am very pleased to report to the House tonight the improvements in e-health and the innovations in my constituency in Northern Ireland. The innovations are such that we were delighted to welcome Commissioner Borg last year to look at the remote monitoring of patients and the new system of access to patient records. These are hugely important steps forward in healthcare provision within Northern Ireland. Having better access to information, particularly patient information, enables improved speed of diagnosis and more efficient treatment. Northern Ireland is a rural community, and in that rural community many patients with long-term chronic illnesses are now being monitored remotely so that their health is better catered for, and patient times and doctors’ surgeries are less necessary."@en1
