"Mr President, the escalating situation in the Central African Republic continues to be a source of concern for this House and indeed the entire international community. Since the coup d’état organised by the Seleka rebels in early 2013, there has been a widespread breakdown of law and order in the country and human rights violations have become a daily occurrence. In this last week alone, 400 people have been killed in the fighting between the predominately Muslim Seleka and the Christian militia groups, with incidences of torture, rape and summary execution being reported daily. The rising sectarian violence poses a real risk of genocide and threatens to destabilise the whole region. The international community has reacted. The EU has set aside EUR 50 million in aid and France has deployed 1 600 troops as part of a wider resolution by the UN Security Council. However, the security presence has thus far been insufficient to control the crisis and urgent intervention is needed to restore peace and order in the country. Amnesty International has said that this is of an unprecedented scale. I hope that we will see a quick resolution and that peace will be brought to this terrible crisis."@en1
