"Madam President, I agree with everything that has been said by the previous speaker. I think the report is very important. It is an annual report and it focuses on the contribution of competition policy to eliminating barriers, abuses of dominant positions, collusion agreements and distortion of state aid measures to the benefit of the single market. But it is a report and we need action, and that is the reason that I believe that our Competition Commissioner needs to get involved. For example, I see in my own country the abuse of the multinational supermarkets of their dominant market position in dealing with farmers. I also see my own country in the transport sector where the publicly owned, government-subsidised bus company abuses its position and small companies, private companies, are totally disadvantaged because they are not getting the subsidies. We have seen what has happened in the mobile phone sector, where there was a cartel operating. Thankfully, as a result of the Committee on Petitions, of which Ms Mazzoni is the chairman, and the dogmatic approach taken by the Commissioner, we now will have no more roaming charges as from April next year. So competition is the life of trade. It is crucially important. It is consumer-orientated, it is for the benefit of the consumer and that is why I welcome this report because what we need at the end of the day is action."@en1
