"Tax fraud and tax evasion are estimated to cost the EU economy EUR 1 trillion a year and so it is clear that more needs to be done, especially at a time when EU citizens are facing higher taxes and reduced public spending. I therefore support the principle of this report, which would extend the automatic exchange of information (AEOI) on taxation between Member States by increasing the categories of taxation that are subject to AEOI. However, I wanted to see the report go further and supported amendments to make exchange of information mandatory and to strengthen sanctions in cases of non-compliance. Unfortunately Conservative and Liberal Democrat MEPs succeeded in watering down the proposals and I therefore abstained on the final vote because I believe the report as it is will not go far enough in introducing the measures needed to fight tax evasion."@en1
