"Madam President, when workers such as those in Dell, Waterford Crystal and TalkTalk were left on the scrapheap due to a crisis they did not cause, they were offered little except for the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund. This fund has been mainly used as a painkiller for what is a cancer of mass unemployment. Now the austerity hawks are not even happy to leave access to this painkiller untouched. Although they failed to scrap the fund completely, it has suffered a massive 70% cut, lowering the budget from EUR 500 million to 150 million. The scope of the fund has been widened so self-employed workers can apply as well. Of course support for self-employed workers is welcome, but together with the cuts it will mean more workers competing for less money. Lastly, no real steps have been made to raise the co-financing rate, which means that in a number of crisis countries governments would simply not apply for EGF support. I therefore could not vote in favour of these attacks on the unemployed, who are the victims of this crisis."@en1
