"On behalf of the UK Conservative Delegation we were pleased to be able to support an alternative motion for a resolution on the report on sexual and reproductive health and rights. The UK Conservative Delegation recognises that there were a number of valuable suggestions in the report relating to the protection of womenʼs rights and the equal treatment of gay, lesbian and transgender people. However the report went too far in prescribing compulsory sex education for primary school children; it was highly critical of national parliamentsʼ budgets in the area of sexual and reproductive health and rights, and called for a number of prescriptive measures to be put in place with regards to contraception, abortion and family planning. The UK Conservative Delegation firmly believes that it is not the role of the EU to dictate to Member States, to women and to parents on these specific and highly controversial issues and so we supported the PPE/ECR alternative motion for a resolution which clearly notes that policies relating to sexual reproductive rights and sex education are the competency of each Member State and not of the EU."@en1
