"Mr President, two years after its formation the stark reality is that South Sudan is one of the poorest countries on earth: 50% of the population is thought to be living in poverty and access to healthcare, water and electricity is extremely limited. This report rightly emphasis two factors that should be at the heart of steps taken to address this crisis. Firstly, respect for a stable democratic system of government; and secondly, greater investment in education and agriculture to create a skilled workforce and increase food production. The committee also stresses the economic and social potential underlying greater cooperation between South Sudan and its neighbours. Whilst I recognise these benefits, I am also mindful of the ongoing escalation of persecution against Christians in Sudan, as the secession of the predominantly Christian South Sudan has led to the arrest, detention and deportation of many priests and pastors. The issue of licences for new church buildings has also been banned. Ultimately, upholding these fundamental freedoms must be a prerequisite to greater cooperation in the region, moving forward."@en1
