"MEPs first called on the Member States to combat discrimination against the Roma in 1984. Nearly 30 years later, the situation of the Roma and especially Roma women, is still unacceptable. Most Roma women live in extreme poverty and elderly women are the worst off. Very few Roma women work and if they do, they often face discrimination in the workplace. Girls often do not attend school at all or if they do, they leave school early. I welcome the specific call to Member States to prioritise measures to support the education of Roma girls and to combat early school-leaving in their national Roma inclusion strategies and I would urge the Commission to assess this issue in detail in its assessment of the national strategies. I do acknowledge and welcome the Council’s unanimous adoption on 9 December of the Recommendation on Roma integration put forward by the Commission last June, the first ever EU legal instrument on Roma inclusion. All Member States must now follow through on this Recommendation."@en1
