"This report aims to establish a stricter system of rules for fishing in the deep-sea waters of the North Atlantic. The area is very susceptible to overfishing and deep-sea environments are more sensitive to human activity, so a more precautionary approach is clearly needed. I wanted to see a total ban on deep-sea trawling, where heavy, industrial nets are dragged along the seabed. The practice is hugely destructive for vulnerable marine ecosystems and is completely incompatible with the sustainable fishing we have been calling for in the reform of the common fisheries policy. Most scientific opinion states that only a ban on trawling will be effective in helping to protect threatened species and such a ban would be perfectly workable as more selective and less harmful equipment is already available. I am disappointed that an amendment replacing a ban with a review in four yearsʼ time was narrowly passed with the help of Conservative MEPs."@en1
