"I am aware of the current concerns that have been raised in relation to the impact of deep-sea fishing. Deep-sea stocks are highly vulnerable to overfishing, with a real potential for stock depletion in a short period of time. I am concerned that the measures taken thus far have not been effective in solving these fundamental problems. Deep-sea bottom trawling is economically, socially and environmentally costly, and the EU needs to phase out the most destructive fishing methods in favour of more sustainable methods. This is why I have voted in favour of this amendment to re-introduce a ban on deep-sea bottom trawling below 600 meters. I was very disappointed to learn that the bottom trawling ban that I and my colleagues supported was narrowly rejected."@en1
