"Mr President, the new common fisheries policy is definitely a step forward. The UK fishing industry saw over GBP 770 million worth of fish caught in 2012. It boasts the European Union’s second-largest fishing fleet in terms of capacity and sixth-largest by number of vessels. The common fisheries policy is hugely important to the economy of my country, and London – the region I represent – is of course a very large consumer of fish products. The agreement reached has seen concessions made by all sides, but I welcome the positive and successful contribution that the UK has made to the deal which we voted on today. This new agreement will give Member States greater control and flexibility over their fisheries policy, whilst enforcing the necessary limits needed to ensure that fishing is conducted on a sustainable basis. I am pleased that this will be achieved by annual quotas that are underpinned by firm scientific advice based on conservation of marine resources, and by moving away from the more politically motivated short-termist approach that has historically been witnessed for far too long."@en1
