"Mr President, the new common fisheries policy (CFP) promises much: a so-called discard ban, regionalisation, incentives to maximise the value of catches and multiannual fisheries plans. My fishermen in Northern Ireland have been congratulated for the courage they have shown in addressing the challenges contained in the new CFP. This courage should be rewarded. Next week EU fisheries ministers will meet in Brussels to agree fishing opportunities for 2014. These decisions are critical for our fishermen and for our fish stocks. Fisheries in the Irish Sea have been managed to a position where the industry is dependent upon one species – nephrops. The scientific advice we depend on to manage the stock emphasises how stable the stock is as fishermen have reduced effort in the area and adopted highly selective gears. It is therefore imperative that a rollover of the 2013 TAC is secured for 2014, not cuts. The stock is stable and it is precisely this stability that needs to be enshrined in the fisheries plans of tomorrow."@en1
