"Mr President, this agreement comes alongside CETA, the free trade agreement between the EU and Canada, which provides corporations with the possibility of suing governments for loss of profits. It coincides as well with a massive protest movement on the Chalkidiki peninsula in Greece against the gold mine operated by a subsidiary of the Canadian mining company Eldorado Gold. The local population are up in arms against the irreparable environmental and health damage this threatens: water supplies could be poisoned with mercury, lead and arsenic, and forest land would need to be cleared. Fifteen thousand people marched on the Canadian Consulate and were disgracefully and brutally repressed. If there was a change of government and the contract was cancelled, the investor-state dispute settlement mechanism would give Eldorado Gold the possibility to challenge the decision and to bypass the most basic elements of parliamentary democracy. The possibility of 2 000 jobs in the context of mass unemployment is being used to try to force through acceptance of this project. But people rightly do not accept this blackmail, and they have my solidarity and my support. On the basis of a socialist programme, and a break with the capitalist system of profit maximisation, Greek society and the Greek economy could be rebuilt sustainably."@en1
