"Mr President, I abstained on this report. I welcome progress with the Protocol. The UK does have a small interest in the fisheries off Morocco and the Western Sahara and that is why I have taken some interest in the debate.
What I look for in this new agreement is an assurance that it conforms to international law; that it will provide value for money to the UK and EU taxpayer; that those fishing opportunities secured will be sustainable and surplus to the needs of the local fishing industry in the region; that safeguards are in place to ensure financial support is utilised in the correct manner; and, finally, that any agreement must not undermine UN efforts to find a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution in the Western Sahara. This report makes some progress, but not enough. Therefore, I abstained."@en1
