"Mr President, this is of great importance to me – and to my country indeed – because one of those executed on 16 April 2009 was a constituent of mine, a young man called Michael Dwyer from Tipperary, accused, like the others, of being involved in a terrorist plot – which was never proven of course. There are a number of anomalies that have occurred since which need investigating. One: the Bolivian authorities claimed that he was shot six times in the chest whereas the Irish state pathologist established that he was shot once by somebody standing over him, in the heart. Secondly, the two survivors, Mr Tóásó and Mr Tadić, said that he actually survived the raid in the hotel and was summarily executed subsequently in Santa Cruz airport. That is why the Irish authorities and particularly, Mr Gilmore, the Tánaiste, and the EU have asked for an independent, international investigation – which is the least we can have – and also, of course, for a fair trial for the two men. We should demand it because we have the power and the wherewithal to do so."@en1
