"Mr President, this important resolution concerns not only human rights organisations, but also politicians, governments and millions of football fans across the world. There are hundreds of thousands of migrant workers in Qatar, most of them from South Asia, and many of them from Bangladesh. The World Cup stadia and other construction sites have shone a light on what Amnesty International has called ‘the widespread and routine abuse of migrant workers’. The Qatari Government and the football authorities must take notice. The world will not stand idly by while people work – and even die – as slaves to build a venue for one of our greatest sporting competitions. This resolution urges the Qatari Government to immediately apply the ILO Convention concerning Forced Labour. We will not stand for the use of forced labour. We must all work together to help the Qatari Government achieve international labour and human rights standards and we should closely monitor what is being done to put things right. Firstly we need an overhaul of the visa sponsorship system. Passports and wages should not be withheld and no one should be forced to stay in a country against their will."@en1
