"Mr President, first of all I would like to stress that the Liberals and Democrats here pushed for the urgency resolution to be a reaction to the serious violation of human rights that we are witnessing and, in particular, for the trials of the 2009 mutiny, especially the death sentences handed down to 152 defendants. Unfortunately, other political groups felt the need to focus on the elections, and the ECR Group does not even seem to believe that the death penalties are worth condemning. Of course, the upcoming elections in Bangladesh are a very important concern and, in this respect, I call for the formation of a neutral and impartial transitional government that has the confidence of all political parties and the international community: a crucial element to free and fair elections. But of utmost concern to me, and of real urgency, is the situation in Bangladesh, where 152 death sentences have been delivered."@en1
