"LIFE is one of the smaller EU programmes, accounting for less than 0.3% of the total EU budget, but it is one of the most successful ones and will continue to be the only EU programme exclusively dedicated to supporting environmental and climate change projects. Since the first LIFE programme began in 1992, a total of 54 projects have been financed in Ireland, 38 focusing on environmental innovation and 16 on nature conservation, with a total investment of EUR 110 million, of which nearly half came from the EU. The agreed budget of EUR 3.1 billion for the 2014-20 programme is less than I would have liked but is approximately EUR 900 million more than the current programme. I do welcome the emphasis on climate action and resource efficiency in the new programme. The introduction of new ‘integrated projects’ using funding from more than one EU programme or other funding (either national, regional or private sector) to tackle water, waste, air quality and nature protection will also require a change in approach from national authorities and NGOs who have taken part in LIFE projects in the past and are considering doing so again."@en1
