"Mr President, as was the case with Framework Programme 7, Horizon 2020 brings together a strong package aimed at supporting research and development across the EU, particularly for research projects considered to contribute to scientific excellence. It is to be welcomed that it will be easier for small and medium-sized enterprises to access funding from this source, thus increasing the chance of supporting projects with the potential not only to provide valuable research and science but also to lead to job creation and wider benefits.
The UK has been a net beneficiary of the former FP7 Programme, and I very much hope that this will continue to be the case during the lifetime of Horizon 2020.
London, my constituency, is home to many leading internationally known universities and it is these institutions which need this continued successful funding. It is vital that they should be able to access this and to have links with research partners throughout the continent. Horizon 2020 will make sure that these factors remain in place.
I am very pleased that I and my Group were able to support the programme here in Parliament."@en1
