"Mr President, at the end of the last debate you yourself made a Biblical reference to people staying awake. The Bible also refers to tax collectors and they were no more popular then than they are now, but nevertheless taxation is something that is necessary for Member States to exist and provide services. That is why I welcome the Commissioner’s and the rapporteur’s comments this morning and especially the proposals that we try and reduce fiscal fraud, tax fraud and tax avoidance, especially not allowing people to use the advantages of the single market to avoid paying taxes. That is something I welcome.
The other point I would like to make is that Member States can set their own tax levels, and we guard that jealously in Ireland particularly in relation to our corporation tax and would like it if there were less comments regarding that from more powerful entities."@en1
