"Mr President, the social economy has continued to grow, even as the rest of our economy falters. There are 70 000 social enterprises and a million employees in my own country, Britain, alone. In my constituency there are enterprises like Future Business in Cambridge, which was built with European funds, Big Barns, which supports local food producers in Bedfordshire, and Destiny, which provides mentoring to disadvantaged people in Colchester. However, I would I ask the Commissioner when implementing this programme to safeguard cooperatives and mutuals, which have led in what it means to be a social business, and funding to micro enterprises. For all the promises, bank lending to small businesses in Britain has still fallen by GBP 600 million this year. I also ask the Commissioner to safeguard support for disabled people’s inclusion in former Progress funding through organisations which are controlled by disabled people themselves. Commissioner, the acronym for this programme is pronounced in English the same as the word ‘easy’, but we both know that the objective of social change we have set ourselves is anything but easy. I wish this programme success."@en1
