"It is good to see you back in the chair, Mr Karas. It is a cliché to speak about lies, damned lies and statistics, but there is a certain truth in it, because quite often people can use statistics selectively, to back up their own views, rather than basing their views on the statistics. As my colleague Mrs Gáll-Pelcz mentioned, statistics that are sound and reliable and based on fact are the most important thing.
I have seen great use being made of statistics, especially in sport where it has transformed tactics. Players who might have been seen to have had a good game may, when one looks at their statistics, in fact have had a bad game and vice versa. We need the same reliability regarding statistics in policy-making in Europe."@en1
