"Upon becoming familiar with the functions of the European Parliament, I, like many other citizens, was bemused to discover that, for one week every month, the European Parliament transports itself from Brussels to Strasbourg. As one can easily imagine, the costs involved in such an operation are vast, estimated at EUR 180 million a year. There are also significant environmental consequences to the current arrangement, with the best estimation being that it produces 19 000 tonnes of CO
a year. As a member of the single seat steering group of the European Parliament, I wholeheartedly voted in favour of this report. The Parliament has now sent a strong message to the European Council, that this expenditure can no longer be justified. It is my sincere hope that the Council will see sense and make it possible to end the travelling circus once and for all."@en1
