"I voted to support the agreement reached on the reform of direct payments. While this reform is not perfect, it aims to strike a balance between food security and environmental protection while assisting farmers in receiving a fair return for fair work. Furthermore, flexibility has been built in for Member States to tailor a policy which best reflects the needs and specificities of their agricultural sector.
It is essential that we give farmers the stability and security to plan ahead. The agreement contains many positive aspects, such as the targeting of active farmers and the new young farmers’ scheme.
At present, only 6% of European farmers are younger than 35. European agriculture is facing the real problem of not having enough farmers on the land to meet the food security and environmental challenges the CAP is tasked with.
The mandatory EU-wide scheme to give young farmers an extra 25% in top-up payments, as well as additional targeted measures under Pillar 2, are to be welcomed and implemented as soon as possible."@en1
