"Madam President, I voted against this report because the proposals fall far short of the requirements we need to ensure a fairer common agricultural policy.
With regard to the ending of the beet sugar quotas in 2017, the proposal fails to make any real concession to the cane sugar sector. With limitless beet products from 2017, the cane sugar sector will be exposed to greater competition and, at the same time, will be held back by the unchanged EU rules on the import of cane.
We want a stable sugar market. We should deregulate the cane sector as well as the beet sector. We should do more to reduce tariff barriers and to make it easier to import cane sugar into the EU. With a weaker cane sector, African, Caribbean and Pacific countries will also be at a disadvantage, unable to find a market for their crop in the EU.
Failure to reform will result in the closure of cane sugar refineries across the EU and will cause thousands of job losses. People rely on their jobs to feed their families, and we should not support these damaging proposals because they put people’s livelihoods at risk."@en1
