"I voted in favour of this proposal, as I have always supported the Rural Development Pillar, believing its payments represent far better value for public money than Pillar 1 support. I want the CAP not just to work in the interests of farmers, but to work in the interests of society at large, meeting the social, economic and specifically environmental concerns facing European rural communities and meeting the concerns of the public at large. I believe the Rural Development Pillar is the best mechanism for delivering these outcomes because it supports schemes enhancing biodiversity, stimulating innovation and competitiveness, encouraging young entrants, supporting areas with natural constraints, etc. Successive CAP reforms have set a direction of travel moving away from production-linked support towards the delivery of public benefits. I am disappointed this CAP review did not take further steps in that direction, strengthening the only part of the CAP providing tangible benefits for the EUʼs rural communities and delivering good value for citizens."@en1
