"Madam President, I welcome today’s vote to make it mandatory for big companies to increase women’s participation on their boards, and I am calling on listed companies in Dublin to step up to the plate now. In Ireland, women occupy less than 11% of the seats at the boardroom tables of big corporates. However, the decisions on these companies’ activities tend to impact as much – if not more – on women as on men. By adopting this directive, Parliament is sending a signal to governments and to listed companies that it is no longer acceptable to leave most corporate decision making in the hands of men. Clearly, with so few women participating on the boards of big companies, not enough is being done at corporate level to encourage and actively pursue women’s involvement. This directive will require a genuine commitment by government and business groups alike to ensure its full implementation."@en1
