"After a year of tough negotiations with the Council, the outcome of the vote on the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) represents a victory for Parliament. MEPs have secured more substantial and favourable funding for EU regions to invest in development projects, as well as achieving more favourable pre-financing and co-financing rates for the EU’s outermost regions. My own constituency is set to be classified as a ‘transition’ region under new categorisation for the 2014-2020 period, meaning more leeway in how ERDF funding is spent. Nevertheless, the fact that 60% of funding spent must satisfy four thematic areas of the Europe 2020 Strategy can only be considered a good thing, given the Strategy’s commitment to sustainable transport, promotion of employment and education, as well as research and innovation. Moreover, the British Prime Minister recently announced that Northern Ireland was to receive an allocation of approximately EUR 456 million as part of the ‘investment for growth and jobs goal’, which is fantastic news for my constituents. The ERDF is not absolutely perfect. For instance, investment in constructing regional airports can no longer be supported by ERDF funding. Nevertheless, the overall package represents a very good deal in terms of investing for growth and jobs."@en1
