"I have been looking closely at issues surrounding Europol in recent weeks, particularly in conjunction with Fair Trials International, a legal NGO based in my constituency, which has just released a report on the work of Interpol. I recently submitted a parliamentary question about the relationship between Europol and Interpol, specifically in relation to some countries’ abuse of Interpol’s red notice system in politically motivated cases: the risk remains that if Europol always shares and circulates Interpol’s information, it could be indirectly assisting political prosecutions by undemocratic governments and thus broadening their abuse of human rights. Similarly, questions remain about Europol’s circulation of its own information to Interpol or other parties, given the potential for this data to be abused. With these fears in mind, I call on the Council to be extremely cautious in its extension of third-party agreements. Although the need to share information is paramount, we must ensure that this process is not open to exploitation. I endorse the list of countries added in this report, which includes stable democracies and key partners such as Brazil, Georgia and Mexico, but will continue to urge the utmost care in future agreements."@en1
