"Since 2011, Jordan’s economy has suffered a number of setbacks. The civil war in Syria has seen a huge influx of refugees to the country, whilst the political situation in Egypt has disrupted gas supplies, leading to higher energy costs as alternative supplies have been sought. Such events have compounded the financial strains caused by Jordan’s pre-existing and on-going internal political reforms. As a stable Arab Monarchy that is of strategic importance to the wider security and stability of the Middle East, it is vital that assistance is offered where appropriate. Furthermore, it should be added that Jordan is a strong ally of the EU and its Member States, having entered into a formal Association Agreement in 2002. I am pleased to have voted in favour of awarding this loan, which will help Jordan to stabilise its long-term financial position, enabling it to push ahead with its programme of reforms."@en1
